Perhaps there’s a bigger reason why Harry and Hermione never got together other than she fancied Ron Weasley more. What if Hermione knew that she and Harry were actually siblings and therefore never thought of him romantically because that’s incest and hopefully still illegal in wizarding circles and would take the series into Games of Thrones levels of wrongness?

The secret siblings theory suggests that James and Lily Potter welcomed baby Hermione into the world shortly before conceiving her little bro Harry and hid her away with the Grangers to keep her safe from the Death Eaters. A fan theory would be nothing without (ahem) ‘definitive proof’ of course but there’s apparently plenty of evidence to support Harry and Hermione being siblings.

It explains how Hermione knows so much about Harry when they first arrive at Hogwarts, why they often finish each other’s sentences (not too unlike twins Fred and George Weasley) and why Hermione isn’t embarrassed by Rita Skeeter’s stories of a romance between her and Harry as she knows it would never happen because of the whole sharing DNA thing.

Of course, this theory makes that kissing scene in Deathly Hallows pretty awkward (even if it was a horcrux induced illusion suffered by Ron) and J.K. Rowling’s confession that she wishes she’d had Hermione get together with Harry instead of Ron even more awkward and a tad pervy.
