10 Crazy Cartoon Voice Casting Choices That Actually Worked

8. Justin Timberlake - Shrek The Third

Shrek The Third We are the first people to get in line to defend Justin Timberlake and insist that he has done a fantastic job retooling his career slightly and being taken seriously as an actor. He€™s way funnier than most people would have given him credit for a few years ago, and has shown that he can hold his own in dramas like The Social Network. But back when he appeared in Shrek the Third, we had much less faith in the ex-Nsyncer. Let€™s face it, his filmography up to that point hadn€™t exactly been stellar (with the exception of Model Behavior, which is the greatest, most awful film ever made). And when he showed up as a young King Arthur, it just felt like stunt casting. Hey, let€™s throw Justin Timberlake into the movie, people will pay to see that. But one of the things that the Shrek franchise has always done particularly well is in creating new interpretations of aspects of fairy tales and legends that we think we already know. When you think of Arthur (Artie, to his friends) as a kid/teen, you think of the noble young lad who pulled the sword out of the stone and all that stuff. (Or you might have a strange inclination to ship him with Merlin, if you€™re a fan of a certain BBC drama.) But what you get in Shrek the Third is a scrawny high school outcast who is equal parts exhilarated and terrified at the idea of being king, and Timberlake nails it.
