Horror aficionados were thrilled when Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s long-awaited meta-horror-comedy finally arrived in 2012, after a few years on the shelf. Despite a cast that included Avenger Chris Hemsworth, the film languished in development hell as the studio was unsure how to market its tricky combination of teen horror, sci-fi, and satire. Fortunately, the flick was well worth the wait.

As if the witty screenplay weren’t enough evidence of the creators’ combined horror expertise, a scene early on in the movie also sees the enigmatic group behind the story’s horror take bleak bets on which monster will crop up to off our protagonists in short order.

It’s a great chance to hit the pause button and test your own horror knowledge at home, as the board lists the villains of countless famous horror franchises throughout the decades.

Classics like Hellraiser, The Evil Dead, and Reanimator are of course represented, but real horror heads will appreciate the inclusion of some more obscure favourites such as The Scarecrow Folks and a misspelled appearance from later MST3K star Reptilicus.
