6. Crank
There comes a point in Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's gloriously insane action thriller Crank in which you realise that, no matter which direction the film may suddenly zig-zag, nothing would surprise you. Whatever or whoever Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) has to push out of his way, he'll do it. After all, he's a one-man army. He's a raging, rampaging id. He's literally the world's biggest adrenaline junkie. And if you had to explain to someone just what the film was about, you might describe it as a mixture of Speed, Grand Theft Auto and Run, Lola, Run. But this wouldn't quite do justice to the sight of Chelios 'juicing' himself with a defibrilator, having spontaneous sex with his girlfriend in front of hundreds of spectators or breaking a man's neck as they both fall 3,000 ft from a helicopter. Alternatively, you might just point them to the film's end-credits sequence; in which Chelios runs and shoots his way through a 16-bit style world; 'vanishing' gangsters with one headshot after another before his heart packs in and the game's over as abruptly and absurdly as it had started.
