10 Creepiest Zombie Movie Transformations
8. Stephen - Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Bringing it all the way back to the film that cemented the zombie genre, George A. Romero's fantastic Dawn of the Dead is actually quite a light-hearted affair for the most part. After a grim and intentionally chaotic opening, the few survivors we have left make it to the famous shopping mall.
This was capitalism's modern-day fortress at the time, but thanks to online shopping the mall is going the way of the dead these days.
Out of all the survivors to make it to the mall, Stephen is the one who has himself together the least. With his nerves visibly taking over his actions for a long time, he finally comes around once the group locks things down tight. Even stopping off for a romantic meal.
But this being a zombie film, of course, humans have to go and mess it all up and a bunch of raiders burst in and allow the dead to reclaim the mall. This leads to the turn of Stephen - and this one hits different.
That's because the audience has seen his journey take place throughout the film. The first thing he does when turned is to return home because that was the last thing he had on his mind before zombification took hold, almost damning his friends in the process.
