10 Criminally Overrated Horror Movies

9. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

IKWYDLS is a boring, middle of the road slasher, which concerns a bunch of unlikable teens running over a man and killing him. Naturally, they dump him in the sea, but the next year he comes back for revenge. The film was based on a script by the man who wrote Wes Craven's ironic and self referencing slasher movie Scream - Kevin Williamson. Scream gave modern horror a real injection in the arm whether you like it or hate it - is a very important film. I Know What You Did Last Summer did good business at the box office and paved the way for a sequel - I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which was as turgid and boring as its predecessor. Neither of these films can transcend their mediocrity. The killer is just not menacing enough when compared to Leatherface, Michael Myers, Freddie Kruger and all of the great slasher monsters alumni. I think that the film was an after thought from Kevin Williamson whilst he poured all of his creativity into the Scream franchise. I Know What You Did Last Summer is not really a 'bad' movie, just terribly mediocre as I said above. If you like slashers, it may be mildly diverting chewing gum for the eyes. But anyone who says that this is their favourite horror film obviously has not watched anything of note in the horror film industry.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
