10 Criminally Underrated Westerns You Must See Before You Die

6. Silverado

Columbia Pictures

Lawrence Kasdan is perhaps best known for his contributions to Indiana Jones and Star Wars, where he was a driving force on both projects. Apart from that, Kasdan has also been nominated for three Oscars, with his screenplays for The Big Chill, Grand Canyon, and The Accidental Tourist having come close to winning the writer/director several gold statues in the Best Adapted and Original Screenplay categories.

One release that did seem to slip beneath the radar, however, was 1985's Silverado. A moderate commercial success at the time, the film, which featured a brilliant cast comprised of Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Scott Glenn, Kevin Kline and even a young Jeff Goldblum, only has an average 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, despite being one of the more enjoyable Westerns released during the genre's quieter periods.

Simple in premise but contagiously energetic, Silverado is one of Kasdan's most under appreciated works, and a film worth seeking out if you're in the mood for a film made in the mould of The Magnificent Seven - even if the trailer doesn't really do it justice.
