10 Criminally Underused Spells And Potions In Harry Potter
8. The Memory Charm
Effect: Causes certain memories to be erased.
Gilderoy Lockhart – despite being a fraud – was highly accomplished at Memory Charms. With such a talent, he was able to lie his way to the top and become a famous wizard.
Though Lockhart wasn’t the only person to use a Memory Charm, the spell is hardly featured beyond the second book. Indeed, after The Chamber of Secrets the Memory Charm was mainly used by the Ministry of Magic to modify the memories of muggles.
Again, the complexity of the spell is never revealed, but given that Lockhart was able to master it, it’s unlikely that the spell is particularly difficult to perform.
It’s also odd that the spell was never taught at Hogwarts. Despite six years under the tuition of the exceptionally talented Professor Flitwick, the Memory Charm wasn’t even mentioned in Harry’s classes.
