10 Criminally Underused Spells And Potions In Harry Potter
6. Fiendfyre
Effect: Dark Magic that creates enchanted flames.
Fiendfyre did not make an appearance until the Battle of Hogwarts in The Deathly Hallows. During said conflict, Crabbe utilised these enchanted flames whilst in the Room of Requirement and ended up dying as a result of his own actions.
Due to how powerful Fiendfyre was in this instance, it feels strange that it wasn’t practised more by dark witches and wizards throughout the series. Indeed, given how ruthless and twisted many of the Death Eaters were, it doesn’t make sense that is was Crabbe who first demonstrated the spell.
Crucially, Fiendfyre was also one of the few ways in which Horcruxes could be destroyed. Though it was argued by Hermione that she would never have dared to use the spell due to how dangerous it is, such an excuse felt a little feeble.
One of Harry’s biggest obstacles during the final novel was finding a method of destroying Horcruxes. As dangerous as the spell is, Hermione should have mentioned it sooner than she did.
