10 Criminally Underused Spells And Potions In Harry Potter

2. The Imperious Curse

Effect: Enables the caster to control their target.

The Imperious Curse is one of the three Unforgivable Curses, and as such, the use of it can result in a lifetime sentence in Azkaban.

Unlike the other two Unforgivable Curses, however, the Imperious Curse doesn’t seem to be particularly difficult to cast. Harry certainly had no issues with it when he broke into Gringotts despite having never used it before.

Though the spell was relatively common in the latter half of the series, it still should have been used much more given its effect. Indeed, there were a number of Death Eaters who worked at the Ministry of Magic (such as Lucius Malfoy and Walden Macnair) who never thought to use the curse on either their boss or their colleagues.

Even with such a harsh punishment, the chances of being caught using the Imperious Curse are remarkably small provided the caster doesn’t act irrationally. Therefore, such a powerful curse should have been put to greater effect by both the villains and heroes of the series.
