10 Critical Darling Movies That Were Shot Dead At The Box Office
5. Dredd (2012)
Before The Boys, Karl Urban had his first taste of slumming it as the hard-nosed titular Judge in Dredd, teaming up with Pete Travis for a lean, mean, no-nonsense action thriller with more style than its somewhat slender budget ought to have allowed for.
This is the film that redefined the adult comic book feature, and did the Judge right. It was lauded by critics and fans alike and served up a gritty and credible alternative to the glossy MCU. But this is also the film that made just shy of its $45 million budget worldwide, and scuppered the likelihood of a sequel.
Dredd was taken down at the box office by over-emphasis of 3D, when the film was more than capable of standing on its own two black-booted feet. While the 3D was impressively utilised, the picture was considered such a 3D event that '3D' was even in the poster and trailer title. Unfortunately, 2D prints of the film were limited and audiences were only willing to shell out so much when it came to the inevitably hiked prices of 3D features.
