10 Critically Acclaimed Films That Struggled At The Box Office
8. Grindhouse (2007)
Taking its name and inspiration from the theatres that used to show predominantly violent, low-budget films, Grindhouse was an interesting experiment by two directors that each have a lot of credibility to their respective names.
Tarantino was already famous for Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs amongst others and contributed the film "Deathproof" to this double-header. It followed the character of Stuntman Mike who uses his souped-up car to murder victims by crashing it, given that he has ensured his own seat alone is safe : - i.e "death proof".
Robert Rodriguez had already directed From Dusk til Dawn and Desperado when he produced the second half of this feature - "Planet Terror". Rose McGowan stars as Cherry, a go-go dancer who has had her leg torn off and replaced with a machine gun in a zombie flick that is every bit as entertaining as it is tongue-in-cheek.
While a very healthy 84% of the reviews from professional critics were positive, the two films combined for just over $25 million at the box office against a combined budget of $65 million. While this shortfall could be attributed to a number of things, it is likely that home media purchases erased this defecit comfortably.
