4. M. Night Shyamalan
What can I say about M. Night that hasn't already been said by everyone else? He's a director who started out with so much promise with his first three films and has since seen a very rapid decline. The reason for this has been prone to speculation for some time now. Was he just a one-trick pony? Was The Sixth Sense a fluke? Did he just have too much pressure trying to top himself? Or is his ego just so big that he makes whatever bullsh*t he wants, regardless of quality? We may never know, but one thing about Shyamalan is clear: He tried. He really did. He is, after all, a human being. And human beings can buckle under pressure. If you have a first movie that's as groundbreaking and amazing as The Sixth Sense, you set the bar high for yourself. Soon, everyone expects your next movies to be just as good or better. That didn't quite happen for M. Night, and even though he may never reach those heights again, we can't fault him for trying.
