10 Critically Reviled Action-Horror Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)

7. Van Helsing

Van Helsing 2004
Universal

Universal's attempt at reviving their Universal Monsters franchise after the success of the first two Mummy films, Van Helsing makes for an enjoyably spooky outing. The film is led by Hugh Jackman, who swaps his claws for crossbows, proving to be a terrific Van Helsing.

The action is very early 2000s, and the CGI rivals that of The Scorpion King, but that almost adds to the charm of the film that it's a little clunky in places. Van Helsing presents itself as a B-Level horror film, and it certainly delivers on that promise; for better and for worse, and best seen through the performance of Richard Roxburgh, who plays an incredibly over the top version of Count Dracula. While the end fight does kind of dissolve into a CGI mess, it is still enjoyable, even if it's not for the reasons you maybe should enjoy it.

Van Helsing may not have been the reboot of the series that Universal was intending, but it made for a much better jumping off point than Tom Cruise's Mummy film!
