10 Critically Reviled Action-Horror Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)

4. The Meg

Van Helsing 2004
Warner Bros.

In a world full of Sharknado's and Mega-Shark Vs Giant Octopus', The Meg sought to take giant shark movies back into prominence. In some ways it did just that!

No one should be expecting Shakespeare when they walk into a Jason Statham led shark film, but the film had a bit more below the surface (pun intended) than the marketing revealed. Statham is fabulous in this film. He knows what kind of film he's in and he performs with enough sincerity that the film never veers into parody. He has great chemistry with co-lead Li Bingbing who is just as charming as Statham.

Some of the set pieces in The Meg is what really sets it apart from the crowd. One of the best scenes features Statham trying to place a tracker on The Meg itself, meaning he has to swim within 100ft of the Megalodon. This makes for great suspense and action as he tries to escape the jaws of the enormous killer shark.

One of the best shark films to be released in recent years (though that's not saying much). The Meg earned middling reviews from critics when in reality it is a unique, science led creature feature.
