10 Critically Reviled Action-Horror Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)

2. The Mummy Returns

Van Helsing 2004
Universal Pictures

The sequel to the first Brendan Fraser led Mummy film, The Mummy Returns is in no way a failure when compared to the original. The Mummy Returns builds on the lore that was established in the first film and expands it, introducing a new villain in the form of The Scorpion King.

Rick O'Connell is the anchor of these films, as the action hero we truly needed at the time; goofy, whacky, but incredibly heartfelt. He really gets to show his range in this film with the introduction of his son, who plays a pivotal role in the story. His relationship with both Evie and Jonathan is perfected in this film, with the three of them being a genuinely engaging trio.

The action scenes aimed to top the original films and they did in spades. A highlight is the battle between the Medjai and the Army of Anubis. The main battle between O'Connell, The Scorpion King and Imhotep is interesting, and would make for a great climax to the film - but it is somewhat hampered by the AWFUL CGI Scorpion King. That said, the battle itself is stellar.

A great follow up to the original film, The Mummy Returns is in no way deserving of a 47% Rotten Tomatoes score.
