10 Critically Reviled Sci-Fi Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)
8. AVP: Alien Vs. Predator
Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score: 21%
Critics Consensus: "Gore without scares and cardboard cut-out characters make this clash of the monsters a dull sit."
Alien vs. Predator was a film that fans had waited years to see and yet never really expected to happen, so when it finally came along in 2004, anticipation and expectations were high. While it's hard to argue that the film lived up to those unbelievably high expectations, should an alien-monster smackdown have had to?
The problem with AVP is that the titular monsters came from thought-provokingly clever franchises that utilised their premises and characters to perfection (well, at least the early films in both franchises did), so people were likely expecting the same here. And just because they didn't necessarily get it, it doesn't mean the film isn't capable of providing solid entertainment.
The fact is that the characters are decent, but the stars were always going to be the Xenomorphs and the Predators - and that's exactly what they were. The battles between the warring species are highly enjoyable and the primary Predator - affectionately known as Scar - is actually the most compelling character in the movie. And that final collision between Scar and the Alien Queen is bloody brilliant.
In spite of its flaws, Alien vs. Predator is a solid showdown between cinema's two most iconic aliens and, in terms, of quality, storytelling and overall enjoyability its miles ahead of some of the other installments in both franchises.
