10 Critically Reviled Sci-Fi Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)

7. Starship Troopers

Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer Score: 63%

Critics Consensus: "A fun movie...if you can accept the excessive gore and wooden acting."

There's no point in delving into this one too deep because that Critics Consensus pretty much sums up Starship Troopers in a nutshell. The reason that this one ended up on this list, in spite of its 63% rating, is down to the fact that it wasn't very well-received at all in the immediate aftermath of its release.

Yes, over the years, critics have softened towards it a little and, again, based on that consensus, its real easy to see why. Starship Troopers isn't a film that's meant to be taken seriously. Wikipedia bills it as a satirical military science fiction action film for goodness sake, so what do you expect from it?

What the film does have is an strong premise, fun over-the-top performances and a truck-load of absolutely amazing (Academy Award-nominated) special effects - which considering this was essentially just a big-budget B-movie really is quite something.

Starship Troopers ain't a masterpiece, but it sure is a lot of fun!
