10 Critically Reviled Sci-Fi Movies (That Weren't Actually That Bad)
6. The 5th Wave

Critic Consensus: "With unimpressive effects and plot points seemingly pieced together from previous dystopian YA sci-fi films, The 5th Wave ends up feeling like more of a limp, derivative wriggle."
There's a good chance we've witnessed the end of big-budget YA dystopian novel adaptation era, but in the heart of the previous decade they were all the rage. Well, at least some of them were. Yep, following the successes of Harry Potter, Twilight and The Hunger Games, Hollywood was on the hunt for another one - and that's where The 5th Wave came in. Unfortunately critics weren't anywhere near as kind to it as they were with its predecessors.
Sure, its tone is a little uneven and the more interesting of the two narratives receives less attention, but there was a lot to love about it. For a start, the concept - in which aliens arrive on earth and meticulously take out humans in a series of waves - is highly engaging, while the incredible performances from Chloe Grace Moretz and Nick Robinson carry the film through its less-than-stellar moments.
In all honesty, the worst thing about The 5th Wave is how rushed parts of it were. It would have thrived if it had been a TV series (à la The 100) but if you happen to watch it with the 30 minutes of darker deleted scenes, it's a much more thrilling sci-fi adventure more in-line with the excellent novel.
