10 Criticisms Of The Amazing Spider-Man Films That Are Completely Unfair

2. Electro Was A Goofy, Unthreatening Villain

Electro was criticised for a lot more than just his design. Some fans claimed that he simply wasn't a great villain. He was goofy and unthreatening. But was he really?

It's true that Max Dillon is goofy at the start. But he's meant to be, and he hasn't become a villain yet. After he becomes Electro, he's a thoroughly threatening bad guy. Ok, maybe the line about lighting his birthday candles was a bit goofy, but it is still Max Dillon after all, so that's just consistent characterisation.

Physically, Electro is an incredibly imposing opponent for Spider-Man. His entrance in Times Square does a fantastic job of emphasising his sheer power, making it seem almost impossible for our hero to defeat him. Hans Zimmer's intense score also adds to this idea immensely, and it was beautiful to hear Electro's theme again in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
