There's few directors who've bridged the gap between intellectual filmmaking and escapist fare with the brilliance of one Christopher Edward Nolan, a man who has turned the blockbuster into auteur territory with his heart-and-head-pounding works over the last decade.

Since 2010, the 49-year-old has released four films, including two mind-bending science-fiction smashes in the shape of Inception and Interstellar, proving as adept at high-end conceptual flourishes as serving up popcorn thrills of the highest calibre.

The Dark Knight Rises, the acclaimed trilogy capper to his reinvention of Batman on the big-screen, is perhaps the most orthodox film in his latter-day oeuvre, arguably the best of the series and often criminally underrated when stacked up against its predecessors - but it's his brilliantly orchestrated WWII drama Dunkirk that shows him at full power; a masterful war movie when the enemy is never seen.

His latest film Tenet remains shrouded in secrecy - though it will reportedly involve time travel and attempts to stop a global war - but with the picture currently slated to kick-off the returning movie season at the end of the current pandemic, there's surely no better director in the business to bring audiences back to the cinema.
