10 Current Directors Who Just Can't Seem To Miss
2. Bong Joon-ho
Filmography: Snowpiercer, Okja, Parasite
The South Korean filmmaker may be a hot commodity right now after his culture-shifting victory at the Academy Awards earlier this year, but he's been pumping out consistently excellent films for most of his career, even before his sly class piece conquered the world.
His works The Host, Mother and Memories of Murder often crop up in international lists collating the finest works of Korean cinema, but his move into English-language works this decade has revealed his impressive power to juggle productions outside of his home country.
Post-apocalyptic sci-fi actioneer Snowpiercer married muscular thrills with a powerful social consciousness - and gave Chris Evans one of his best performances away from Captain America's shield - while Okja, co-written with Jon Ronson of The Men Who Stare At Goats fame, presented an eclectic parable of a genetically enhanced "superpig". Parasite serves as a suitable culmination of his themes and with the globe as his oyster now, it will be thrilling to see what Bong turns to next.
