8. The Life And Death Of Ariana Dumbledore

During both parts of the Deathly Hallows films, we got a glimpse into Dumbledore’s past life. However, those films largely neglect the story of Dumbledore’s sister Ariana.

Ariana lived a very sheltered life after being attacked as a child at the age of six after a Muggle boy saw her practising magic.

The attack left her traumatised to the point that her magic abilities became uncontrollable. Later, Ariana would become an obscurial, a witch or wizard whose magic has been suppressed due to a shameful attachment to their magic.

Ariana was kept hidden away from the magical world, with many believing that she was a squib and that their mother was ashamed of her because of it.

It’s explained that the real reason Ariana was hidden away was that their family feared she would be seen as a threat to the International Statute of Secrecy and would be shipped off to St. Mungo’s.

At the age of 14, one of Ariana’s outbursts killed their mother, with Ariana herself dying a few months after in a crossfire between Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald. However, neither knows who was the one who cast the life-ending spell that killed Ariana.
