10 Deadliest Spells In The Harry Potter Universe

5. Repello Inimicum

What does it do? Creates a magical barrier that can disintegrate anybody who walks through it.

Given how useful Repello Inimicum can be, it's a wonder we don't see it being cast in more places across the wizarding world; it could be used to stop intruders gaining access to Hogwarts, or to stop prisoners escaping Azkaban so damn easily, to name but a few applications.

But in the Harry Potter films, we see the charm being used only once; at the start of Deathly Hallows Part 2. With Voldemort and his troops looming, the Hogwarts professors (and Molly Weasley) gather in the courtyard and shoot the spell high up in the sky, creating a protective barrier around the entirety of the school and grounds.

The potency of Repello Inimicum is then displayed, as Scabior and his goons make a run for the bridge being guarded by Neville Longbottom, only for a handful of them to be disintegrated into a swirl of bright blue light. The spell is ludicrously lethal when it's used to enclose a specific location, and though the barrier can be broken down with enough force, it takes a lot of time, power and effort to do so.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
