10 Deaths That Ruined Horror Movies

3. Russell Franklin - Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Thirteen Ghosts Dennis
Warner Bros.

We've all seen Deep Blue Sea by now and we all know its trashy CGI, but could you honestly have said Samuel L Jackson's character was called Russell? We're guessing not.

The underwater horror takes place in a research facility where scientists have been genetically engineering a kind of super-smart super shark because... reasons. Russell is sent in from corporate to get a handle on things after one of the sharks escapes and begins preying on seafaring humans. Following an in-facility shark attack, a helicopter arrives, crashes and causes an explosion that renders the place pretty useless at keeping the super sharks under control.

So far, so predictable.

However, in one of the most sudden on-screen deaths since Marvin in Pulp Fiction, Russell is cut off mid-monologue and swiftly becomes half the man he used to be. The scene is equal parts shocking and hilarious, and leaves us pretty much without a paddle for the film's remainder. Much like Thirteen Ghosts and Bandersnatch, there is only one cast member truly pulling their own weight, and when Sam Jackson goes down, the rest of Deep Blue Sea sinks with him.
