10 Deleted Scenes That Would Have Improved Movies
1. I Am Legend: Alternate Ending
Easily the most extensive and longest deleted scene on this list, this film was originally something so much better than what we got.
In the theatrical release, the film becomes an average supernatural shoot-em-up in the third act, as the Dark Seekers attack Will Smith's lab and he and his newfound friends have to try and stop them. Ultimately, they fail and Will Smith sacrifices himself by blowing up the entire lab with himself and all the Dark Seekers inside, giving Anna and her son a chance to escape.
As majestic as that is, its boring as sin. The alternate ending would have had the Dark Seekers invade, only for Smith to realize that they're invading to try and reclaim the female one he has in his lab. Turns out the alpha just wants his love back, and Smith is forced to realize that he has been the villain of this story the whole time.
He stares at a wall full of pictures of the various Dark Seekers he has killed over the years in his search for a cure, realizing that they are creatures capable of thinking and feeling, just like humans.
Not only is this a way more interesting ending, there are traces of this thematic story still in the movie! Early on, Will encounters a lion eating a deer and prepares to shoot it, but doesn't when he realizes the lion is just feeding his family. In the theatrical cut, this sequence is fluff and means absolutely nothing.
But in the alternative cut, this scene means everything.
