10 Deleted Stars That Were Bigger Than The Final Movie

6. Christopher Walken, Sam Shepard, Charles Durning - September

Though it still boasts one-time Woody Allen muse Mia Farrow amongst the line-up, Allen's 17th movie, the drama September, was originally starrier than it stands now. When Allen shot September the first time around, Dog Day Afternoon and The Sting actor Charles Durning and Tarzan star Maureen O'Sullivan featured, but they were replaced by Denholm Elliot and Elaine Stritch when Allen decided to shoot the film a second time. In a further case of diminishing returns, one key character's scenes were originally shot with Christopher Walken in the role. When Allen wasn't completely happy with the way it was going, he re-shot Walken's scenes with Sam Shepard in his place. After Allen decided he wasn't happy with the film and went to shoot it again, Shepard had become unavailable, so Sam Waterston took Shepard's place. After all that, when the film was done with Elliot, Stritch and Waterston as the leads, Allen still wasn't happy, declaring he'd like to film the movie again. Presumably he had a cast of even less famous people waiting on the sidelines to shoot it.
