10 Depressing Things About Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice

2. There Are Too Many Heroes Too Soon

Let's count 'em: Superman. Batman. Wonder Woman (played by Gal Gadot). All in roles of relative prominence, which is fair enough. Let's hope Diana doesn't get too sidelined by Snyder in favour of more chest-beating from the two male leads (although that's like hoping a Scorsese movie doesn't have any Stones on the soundtrack). But wait, there's more! Ray Fisher is set to play Cyborg in a minor role, Jason Momoa has been all but confirmed as appearing as Aquaman and we can only pray that Scoot McNairy's character turns out to be a superhero and not the multiple amputee we've heard about. By our count, that's six heroes, which is exactly how many appeared in The Avengers. That movie didn't suffer for having too many lead characters, did it? Not according to most critics or the box office receipts, anyway. Theoretically then, there's no problem for DoJ. But here's the thing: all of the Avengers had introductions in earlier movies, to greater and lesser degrees. Most of them had whole movies to themselves, and Hawkeye was the only character who'd had anything less than a major supporting role in an MCU film. We were all familiar with who they were and what they were about before they all got thrown together in a plot blender. We won't be so lucky with DC's cinematic universe, which seems keen to rush us into massive expansion - likely at the expense of clear character definition and the waste of a great deal of talent. If Warners hope to gauge audience reaction after BvS is released as to who they'd like to see in a solo movie, they'll be lucky if most moviegoers remember who was even in it.
