7. Skynet - The Terminator

Skynet is of course the overarching antagonist of the Terminator franchise, but being an AI superintelligence and all, it doesn't really have a form in the conventional sense.

The T-800 endoskeleton is more emblematic of Skynet than anything, but it isn't Skynet.

Similarly, Terminator Salvation and Terminator Genisys both gave Skynet human avatars - played by Helena Bonham Carter and Matt Smith respectively - but the avatars are a proxy rather than Skynet itself.

And let's be honest, many fans would prefer to straight-up forget these sequels anyway - especially Genisys.

Given that Skynet is centrally preoccupied with wiping out humanity, it's an easy villain to hate, and in an era where the perils of AI are under more intense scrutiny than ever before, they remain a timely antagonising force even as the Terminator franchise itself has increasingly fallen out of favour.

But in the first three Terminator films in particular, the fact that Skynet was a seemingly unstoppable technological force, simultaneously everywhere and nowhere, made it so much more eerie to behold.
