10 Detestable Movie Villains We Never See

6. Jane's Boss - The Assistant

Kitty Green's superb 2019 drama The Assistant focuses on Jane (Julia Garner), a junior assistant at a film production company, where she works under an abusive sexual harasser of a boss (Jay O. Sanders) very clearly modelled on Harvey Weinstein.

Given that we've all seen enough of Weinstein and Weinstein-adjacent characters for one lifetime, it's just as well that Jane's boss is never seen on-screen.

His presence is kept out of frame, he's instead discussed regularly by the film's other characters, and we only hear him speak to Jane, typically abusively, over the phone.

This has the dual effect of both keeping the perspective firmly on those victimised by the boss, and demonstrating how predators such as him are allowed to flourish due to a culture of fear.

As an emblem of everything the #MeToo movement has rallied against, Jane's boss is as easy to loathe as movie villains get, even though our physical impression of him is incredibly limited.
