The success of Selma has caused Ava DuVernay to become something of the flavour of the month when it comes to being suggested for any number of upcoming projects (Black Panther is a popular suggestion), but it's really not all that hard to understand why when her talent is taken into consideration. A superhero movie is a big jump from the kind of movies DuVernay has made in the past, but Spider-Man would benefit from her touch. Marvel has a habit of taking directors you would never think could put out a great superhero movie and getting the best possible results from them, so there's no reason to think that the same wouldn't apply here. It's hard to put a finger on what exactly she would bring to Spider-Man, but his supporting cast could certainly do with some diversity, and DuVernay could be the perfect person to handle that in a way which feels right.
