After focusing on critically acclaimed and gritty war dramas like The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, superhero movies seem like a drastic departure for Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow. However, after playing a key role in putting Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) and Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) on the map, her taking on one of these movies certainly feels somewhat appropriate. Is Spider-Man the right choice for her though? As much as the next Spider-Man movie needs to have some humour, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 stands as proof that it could also do with a shot of seriousness too in order to avoid the cheesy and childish tone which seeped into that widely criticised sequel. Spider-Man would certainly be something new and different for Bigelow, but give her a villain like Kraven to work with and an adaptation of Kravens Last Hunt (a story arc Sony were said to be keen on adapting in those "Sony Hack" emails) and you could very well be looking at the woman who delivers the first Oscar nominated film starring a Marvel superhero. As a bonus, her talent for thrilling action would be another amazing addition.
