Now, say Paramount didn't necessarily want somebody who could hearken back to the roots of the Star Trek series. Maybe they want to continue in the vein of Star Trek Into Darkness, which proved to be the most action-packed (and fatality-heavy) story told in the history of the franchise. If they want somebody who can handle inventive, large-scale sequences that still carry weight and consequence, they could certainly do worse than Lexi Alexander. Whilst she spoke out against being on the shortlist to direct the forthcoming Wonder Woman movie she talked about the weight of the first big female superhero film being on the shoulders of a female director, and how its potential failure could spell bad news for both such things but that weight is significantly lessened on Star Trek. Not that it's lacking in pressure, but it's clearly a franchise that's used to trying new things. Alexander isn't necessarily a new thing, having worked in the industry since 2002, but it's been clear for a while she's ready for her next big step up. Punisher: War Zone should've been her calling card to Hollywood, a deftly-directed action film that sadly went straight to video. Work has been sporadic since then, but she would be perfect to push things even more into darkness.
