Doug Liman just can't catch a break. Despite being the guy who originated the series with The Bourne Identity, it's Paul Greengrass who gets all the credit for pioneering the real-world feel and shaky-cam documentary feel of the Matt Damon spy films. Undeterred, he moved onto Jumper, an adaptation of a surprisingly brilliant young adult novel about kids with the ability to teleport that wound up being a big stinking turd, despite the solid premise and presence of Jamie Bell and Samuel L Jackson (the presence of Hayden Christensen as well might've done it). Then this year Liman looked like he was getting back on track, directing Edge Of Tomorrow previously known as All You Need Is Kill, now apparently being sold as Live. Die. Repeat with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, probably the best blockbuster of the year without a Marvel Studios stamp on it, and it was almost totally ignored. At the very least, you have to hope that Paramount was watching. Because honestly, Edge Of Tomorrow is really good. Like, so so good. It's smart, it's fun, it's progressive, it's funny (in an incredibly dark way) and the premise of an alien invasion Groundhog Day is genius. Liman should be back on the directing A-list after such a masterful job, and seeing him apply all the filmmaking tricks of that into Star Trek would be nothing short of a dream.
Tom Baker is the Comics Editor at WhatCulture! He's heard all the Doctor Who jokes, but not many about Randall and Hopkirk. He also blogs at http://communibearsilostate.wordpress.com/
