10 Directors Who Admitted Their Movie SUCKED
5. Roland Emmerich - Independence Day: Resurgence
As much as everybody initially wanted a sequel to 1996's blockbuster mega-hit Independence Day, it was ultimately a case of "not like this."
Though 2016's Independence Day: Resurgence had a ton of problems from a creative standpoint, the real sticking point for many fans was the absence of Will Smith's original protagonist Steven Hiller, who was given an off-screen death in the sequel.
And so, after it under-performed at the box office, director Roland Emmerich - who is certainly used to weathering his fair share of critical scorn - admitted that the movie didn't work, and that he shouldn't have agreed to helm it. In a Yahoo! interview, he said:
"I just wanted to make a movie exactly like the first, but then in the middle of production Will opted out because he wanted to do Suicide Squad. I should have stopped making the movie because we had a much better script, then I had to really fast, cobble another script together. I should have just said no because all of a sudden I was making something I criticised myself: a sequel."
Given that Resurgence was the first of three recent blockbuster duds in a row for Emmerich - followed by Midway and Moonfall - it's safe to say that his capital as a reliable tentpole director may well be totally depleted. Don't be surprised if he never sees these sorts of budgets ever again.
