10 Directors Who Are Locked In Movie Jail

9. Tony Kaye

The Director: A British director who started out making acclaimed music videos and adverts, whose eye-catching work led to him receiving the script for American History X. He seemed to be on the cusp of greatness, though his well-earned reputation for being hot-heated got him into deep trouble. The Crime: This might be most bizarre entry on the list, as American History X was a great film and a financial success. The issue is that he delivered a version of the film that Ed Norton and the studio hated, so they took it away from him to re-edit. Kaye accused Norton of €œraping€ his film, and tried to get his name removed and replaced with Humpty Dumpty. He took out full-page ads complaining about his treatment, and he did interviews where he called himself better than Hitchcock and maybe the best filmmaker in the world. Needless to say, he didn€™t make many friends doing this. The Sentence: Kaye soon went bankrupt after the American History X fiasco, and he€™s spoken of how his actions permanently damaged his career. He€™s only made a couple of films since; one of which wasn€™t even finished as the company making it went bust.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
