The Director: A Finnish director who got his break with A Nightmare On Elm St 4, which led him to Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger. He was also married to Geena Davis around this time, so life was pretty sweet for Renny. The Crime: Cutthroat Island was supernova failure from which nothing not even Harlins marriage could escape. It bankrupt the studio behind it, killed the popularity of the pirate movie, destroyed Davis career and turned Harlin into a gun for hire for the rest of his career. It probably wasn't the best sign that he begged the studio to get out of making it, because he could see it wasn't going to work. The Sentence: Harlin spent the next fifteen years directing any old b-movie that was thrown his way, and anytime he was given a potential lifeline like Exorcist: The Beginning or The Legend Of Hercules he messed up again and got more time added to his sentence. His next movie is with Jackie Chan, so maybe that will give him the shot at redemption hes looking for.
