10 Directors Who Could Save Dying Movies Franchises
1. Edgar Wright - Star Trek
Quite frankly, just about any franchise would be a natural fit for Edgar Wright. After all, every bit of his filmography has added up to Wright being one of the most exciting filmmakers working in Hollywood.
From Shaun Of The Dead to Baby Driver, each of his projects are creatively distinct and impeccably made. He only ever truly approached blockbuster territory with Ant-Man but was unfortunately burned out by executive disagreements and left the project. However, there is a series that needs a passionate, insanely talented filmmaker, and it just so happens to be one Wright is a huge fan of.
On the TV side, Star Trek is doing pretty well. Cinematically though, there's no definite future. Quentin Tarantino has expressed a vague interest, but the odds of that ever coming to fruition are SLIM. Meanwhile, you've got Wright, a writer/director who has excelled in every genre he's taken on, who likely is waiting for the right sales pitch before saying 'yes' to any big-budget project.
Whether it's the Chris Pine continuity or something entirely new (even if Simon Pegg wouldn't like that too much), Wright could further flex his sci-fi adeptness that he showed off in The World's End. His style would easily usher in a new age of Star Trek. No more relying on nostalgia, no more lazy screenwriting, just quality new stories that remind people why Star Trek has lived on for so many years.
