2015 was the year of remixed blockbusters, with several new instalments incorporating elements from the original films. Far more skillful than either Terminator Genisys or Jurassic World was The Force Awakens, which takes everything that was good about A New Hope and uses it to extend the franchise.

As sequels go, The Force Awakens serves its brand well, setting up the characters and conflicts for the future movies. Its basically a series pilot writ large, but you have to concede that J.J. Abrams has pulled it off better than George Lucas himself did with the prequels.

After all, it takes skill (and enormous chutzpah) to follow in Lucass footsteps with a story about a kid being hunted by a black-garbed villain whos readying a planet-sized weapon that can destroy entire worlds. Whether or not the movie will stand the test of time is another matter, but theres no denying that it establishes its new universe well.
