7. The Wizard of Gore (1970)

H G Lewis was no stranger to barf provoking cinema. In fact he positively revelled in it - hoping that this was the chief outcome of his filmic excursions. Barf producing films put bums on seats and popcorn in mouths. The Wizard of Gore is a very funny film featuring the antics of Montag, a deranged magician who performs sadistic and gory stage show horrors upon women. They appear to be okay but after they go away from the theatre, the women all die of their injuries. My favourite pukey moment in the film is whenever Montag chisels his way through a woman's skull and pulls out her brains. The special effects - a dummy head - would barely fool a foetus, but the cheap and seedy vibe just adds to the film's vomit-ometer. There are a lot of other gross out scenes - a woman swallowing a sword, a woman having her gut punched by an industrial press, but the brain chiselling scene made me feel sicker than any of the other tricks Montag pulls out of his bag. Top notch sick, sick fare from Lewis.
