Annihilation starts out simple enough with a strange area on the southern coast of the United States becoming enshrouded in a mysterious shimmer. The shimmer has been expanding for three years following a meteorite strike at its epicenter, where a lighthouse is located. As it expands, expeditions are sent inside to investigate.

Only one person has returned from the shimmer, but he is confused and in a constant daze. His wife, Lena, a cellular biology professor and former Soldier, is brought in to lead a team to further investigate, and the crew begins experiencing strange phenomena, including loss of time and memory.

Soon after, they find newly-evolved species, and several members of the expedition are killed or disappear. As they investigate further, they find a video from Lena's husband's expedition, which shows a horrific emergency surgery carried out on a man's guts, which have become alive.

Other horrors include groups of people who have seemingly turned into lichen and others that became plant-like material. Every footstep that takes Lena and the remaining survivors closer to the lighthouse is nastier and more horrifying than the last. As the danger increases, so too does the overwhelming tension of the film, leaving the viewer both disgusted and intrigued as the film comes to its conclusion.
