7. The Blob (1988)

The Blob is a remake of a film of the same name from 1958, and as you might expect, it steps up the visuals considerably by being in color. The film is all about a meteorite crash in Arborville, California. Soon after the impact, a transient elderly man discovers a slimy substance he cannot remove from his hand.

A group of high school students finds and take him to the hospital, but the slimy mass quickly melts the lower half of the man, who is horrifically dissolved into the ever-growing blob. The alien monster grows larger as it consumes more human flesh, and contact with it results in the melting of any human tissue.

The teens attempt to bring the police to their aid, but to no avail. As the movie continues, the monster continues to eat and terrorize the people of Arborville, as more and more people succumb to its slimy nastiness.

Eventually, it's revealed that the blob isn't extraterrestrial; rather, it's the result of a biological warfare experiment created during the Cold War. It was launched into space due to the danger it posed, but it has returned. The effects work of the blob dissolving people is disturbing, to say the least. If you've seen it, it sticks with you, and despite being a box office failure when it came out, the imagery sticks with you.
