The 2005 adaptation of H. G. Wells' classic novel of the same name kicks up the horror and thrill element of the story into overdrive. The movie follows the same premise as the book and radio play but brings it into a modern setting with Tom Cruise taking the leading role.

The movie opens with strange blasts of lightning hitting the same locations repeatedly all over the globe. It's soon revealed that the lightning was delivering pilots to extraterrestrial war machines, which had apparently been buried beneath the Earth's surface for an unknown amount of time.

The giant tripod machines begin killing people the moment they emerge from the ground, and while their disintegration ray is certainly horrific, it's not necessarily disgusting -- that comes later. After their initial assault, the tripods begin collecting people by grabbing and storing them in cages attached to their underside.

Periodically, they grab a person and pass them through a meat grinder, spraying their remains all over the landscape as they move along. This gory goop begins growing into a strange red alien vegetation, in what appears to be a means of terraforming the planet. The sound effects accompanying the gruesome imagery isn't easily forgotten by anyone who's seen the film.
