2. Hans Was Just Recovering From His Brothers' Abuse
Walt Disney PicturesDon't get us wrong, Hans does some truly screwed up things in Frozen. You can't really excuse the fact that he plots the deaths of both Elsa and Anna, all while maintaining a truly sociopathic ruse as the nice guy would-be ruler. But Hans clearly had a lot of issues growing up, some of which are subtly mentioned during the film. This guy had thirteen brothers, and any Duggar can tell you that's a recipe for resentment and disaster. But what's truly telling about their relationship is how Hans describes some of their interactions growing up -- he mentions that some of his brothers literally pretended that he was invisible for two years straight. Two years. Of not talking to him, of pretending not to hear him whenever he spoke, of ignoring his entire existence and pretending that any room he stood in was empty. That is well and truly screwed up. And it might not justify his actions in this film, but it certainly goes a long way in explaining them.
