10 Disturbing Movie Deaths Nobody Remembers

3. Sofi - I Origins

Mike Cahill's 2014 sci-fi thriller I Origins has largely flown under the radar since release, no matter that it features one of the most disturbing death scenes of any film from the past decade-plus.

Mid-way through the movie, protagonist Ian (Michael Pitt) gets trapped in an elevator with his love interest Sofi (Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey).

Ian manages to climb free to the next floor, and after some hesitation, Sofi appears to also climb to safety just before the elevator suddenly moves again.

Though the pair initially laugh in exasperated relief, the scene soon enough turns to absolute horror when Sofi becomes unresponsive and Ian realises that the bottom half of her body was cut off by the falling elevator.

We only see brief, shadowy glimpses of the gory outcome, but the sheer idea of it, not to mention Ian's traumatised reaction, makes it pure nightmare fuel all the same.

Though it'd be easy for such a seemingly over-the-top scene to come off as unintentionally comical in a serious, low-budget "arthouse" movie, it's incredibly tough to watch.
