In the world of documentary filmmaking it is often the case that the subject of your film at the start of production may not end up being the main focus at the end, never has this been more true than for Netflix's 2017 feature-length documentary Icarus.

Originally conceived by director Bryan Fogle as an investigation into doping in response to 7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong's admission that he engaged in the practise, he enlists the help of Grigory Rodchenkov, head of Russia's national anti-doping laboratory, to explore how doping tests can be cheated.

However, during the course of filming, there are worldwide revelations surrounding Russia's state-sponsored doping programme - in which Rodchenkov was implicated.

The documentary then follows Rodchenkov's journey to America to act as a whistle-blower on the doping programme and expose widespread corruption within the Russian government and anti-doping authorities.

Icarus is an excellent sporting documentary as well as an important look at the world of whistle-blowers and was unquestionably deserving of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.
