In terms of real-world impact, Gabriela Cowperthwaite's 2013 documentary Blackfish is certainly up there as being one of the most influential documentaries of all-time.

Focusing on the life of Tilikum, a captive orca that was held at SeaWorld Orlando, Blackfish raised awareness of the treatment of large mammals held by marine parks across the United States.

Featuring interviews with former SeaWorld employees and marine conservation experts, it provides a deeply disturbing look at the cruel practises that were routinely occurring at the parks.

It also heavily focuses on the number of SeaWorld trainers who had been killed or seriously injured whilst interacting with Tilikum, showing harrowing footage of an attack that almost drowned an employee, as well as explaining the causes of the psychological damage that led to these attacks.

Following the documentaries release, a number of prominent musicians, including The Beach Boys and Willie Nelson, pulled out of their scheduled shows at SeaWorld Orlando and in 2016 it was announced that SeaWorld would be ending its orca breeding programme and begin phasing out its live orca shows.
