10 Do’s and 10 Don’ts For Choosing What Movie To Watch Tonight

6. Don't Assume the Movie Is Just Like the Book

"Hell hath no fury than a woman scorned." Mr. William Congreve did not have the privilege of meeting Twi-hards or Tributes. Enter the insufferable and rather insatiable hardcore book fans. There is nothing worse than adapting a book into a film. Why? Because you have to deal with the book fan base. You not only have to worry about pleasing the average movie goer, but at a deeper level you have to please the reader. It's really a lose/lose for the book fan because the movie is never better than the book ("The Godfather" is the exception. THE exception.) and IF the movie is better than the book, it's because there was a major change to the story that made it more filmable. Good luck with the uproar of angry forum posts and bitter bloggers. Expect a lot of angry emoticons. But when you're choosing a movie, don't assume the movie is just like the movie. It's not. It can't be. Translating a work of art from one medium to the next is never an easy task and when it needs to be done, it requires a lot of... compromise. And don't forget desperation. Hollywood is desperate for movie material which is why every other movie that comes out is an adaptation of something. Graphic novel, novel, old TV show, video games, and now toys. Be mindful of the adaptations. And be sure to look out for "Monopoly: The Movie."

I'm a thinker/fantasizer who writes down his thoughts and fantasies hoping it makes sense to everyone else. Also I'm an aspiring screenwriter, but if I can work in film at all, I'd be happy. One day you may hear the name Ryan Kim and associate it with "Academy Award winning writer" or with "where's that guy with my coffee." If the latter comes true, please let it be Paul Thomas Anderson's coffee I'm getting.
