10 Dream Castings For The Upcoming He-Man Movie
5. Ian McShane - Cringer / Battle Cat
Obviously, there'll be no getting around going full CGI with a character such as this. Which, of course, means that he'll need a truly stellar voice actor in order to really bring him to life. And Ian McShane is that person.
Cringer is Prince Adam's "fearless friend", which Adam points out every episode in the most sarcastic way imaginable. Appropriately named for his extreme cowardice, the quaking green feline also has an empowered alter-ego like his owner. Just as Adam becomes He-Man, Cringer turns into the mighty Battle Cat, and serves as He-Man's mount in virtually every iteration of the franchise.
The role, essentially being two characters in one, calls for some extra oomph on the voicing front. And McShane, with his Annie Award-nominated performance as Tai Lung in 2008's Kung Fu Panda, has clearly already made his name in the world of anthropomorphic animal voice acting.
It's his versatile baritone voice that would make this portrayal work so well. One minute, feeble and meek; the next, growly and steadfast. Though he is often known for playing the villain, the part of both Cringer and Battle Cat would surely make for another feather in the revered actor's well-stuffed cap.
