10 Dumb Movies With Genius Plot Twists
6. Esther Is Actually An Adult - Orphan
2009's psychological horror film Orphan revolves around a couple (Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard) who, after the stillbirth of their child, decide to adopt a 9-year-old Russian girl, Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman).
Much like The Boy, Orphan was marketed and presented to lead viewers down the wrong path, expecting Esther to be a murderously psychopathic child in the vein of Children of the Corn.
Despite largely unfolding as a well-made, trashy B-movie, Orphan packs quite the brilliant jaw-dropper of a twist later on, as it's revealed that Esther is actually a 33-year-old woman with a rare hormone disorder which causes her to resemble a child.
It's a reveal so outrageous and unexpected that it injects some energy into the movie just when it's starting to feel over-familiar and dull.
This leads to a gloriously schlocky third act culminating with one of the greatest one-liners in the history of the genre - "I'm not your f**king mommy!"
